Choosing the Right Glass for Steel Doors
Sightline Steel Doors · December 10, 2023 · 1 min read
Glass Is More Than a View
The glass in a steel door does far more than let light in. It controls thermal performance, privacy, safety, sound, and ultimately, how the door reads from across the room. Choosing wrong is expensive — choosing right is transformative.
Standard Glazing Options
Clear Low-E Dual Pane
The default for most residential installations. Excellent visibility, strong thermal performance, and works in nearly every aesthetic.
Frosted / Acid-Etched
Beautiful for bathrooms, entryways, and bedrooms. Diffuses light while obscuring view. Pairs especially well with Historic Hot Rolled profiles.
Fluted / Reeded
A texture revival that's increasingly popular for pantry doors, interior partitions, and statement entryways.
Specialty Glass
For acoustic isolation, laminated PVB interlayers. For impact zones or any door with glass within 24" of a walking surface, tempered glass is code. For wine cellars and saunas, specialty low-conductivity assemblies.
Glass is the canvas. The steel is the frame. Get the canvas right and the whole composition sings.
